Ten little ideas that make life work? Been there. Done that. Roger, all ten of 'em. You can probably read this book in less than an hour but it will make you think for days. Maybe even years. In my experience, every word in this book is a gift. I hope you, too, find that to be true. My favorite? # 10: Never, Ever Quit! Personal true story if you're interested: A while back I retired from a military service. Then I volunteered to be recalled to active duty to do a job that absolutely nobody else was willing to do. And with good reason--that job wasn't combat but still had every kind of endless emotional misery and conflict you could imagine. Because I had already retired I had a retirement plaque hanging on my office wall. Many days things were soul-suckingly rotten. I would look at that retirement plaque. I imagined dropping it on my boss's desk and quitting--or at least, retiring again, very fast. And then, every time, I asked my self why I had the desk with the job that nobody else was willing to do. I answered that question to my own satisfaction and did what needed doing next. The plaque stayed on that wall for five years until I was transferred to another job that absolutely nobody else was willing to do. Good thing I had all that practice. My next "worst job in the Service" lasted nine years. Altogether I had fourteen bonus years of active duty, helping fellow servicemembers and their dependents transition through the toughest times of their lives--disabilities, and death. Those were the jobs nobody wanted. In the end I got to help a lot of people. It was humbling work. Darn glad I never quit. Make Your Bed is my #1 favorite nonfiction book so far in 2017.
