Pretty simple aluminum oxide sharpening stone. Below are the "Care & Use Instructions" directly from the back of the box (which I couldn't find anywhere on this Amazon listing). Hope someone finds it useful for deciding on a purchase: "This stone uses oil as a lubricant. Immerse the stone for 1 minute to fill it and apply oil on the surface occasionally during use to flush away abraded material. The 150 grit dark side is used for basic sharpening, removing nicks, etc. The 280 grit light side is used for final honing or touchups. Use the full stone surface when sharpening."
