FABULOUS SOUND, BUT... KNOW THESE THINGS ABOUT YOUR TV BEFORE BUYING!
Consumers and pro critics alike have been heaping high praise on the sound of the Sonos Arc Atmos soundbar, so I won't go further other than to say that I completely agree. I had a pre-order in for my Arc soundbar and had it upon release before it quickly sold out everywhere. The BIG question is whether it will work with YOUR television or not, and the answer is... it's complicated.
1) If your TV lacks an ARC connection: Sonos supplies an optical to HDMI adapter with the Arc, so you can connect the Arc to your set, but you will lose Atmos sound capability, since it cannot be transmitted over an optical output.
2) If your TV is from 2016 or earlier: Your set lacks support for Dolby Atmos, so it will not "pass through" an Atmos signal, even from another source like an Apple TV.
3) If your set is from 2017/2018 and has ARC: These are the trickiest years. Your TV must natively support both Atmos and Atmos pass-through to ARC. Here's the issue: ARC doesn't have the bandwidth to support a native Atmos signal--that requires the higher bandwidth eARC connection on the newest sets. So your television has to do the processing work of transmitting Atmos via Dolby Digital+, which actually works well and is within the bandwidth spec of ARC. Likewise, Apple Support states that "Apple TV transmits Atmos at a high bandwidth not supported by ARC"... which is true, but if your TV natively supports Atmos pass through, it will do that same processing work on the incoming Apple TV signal, and Atmos/Dolby Digital+ will get sent to the Sonos Arc. If buying the Sonos Arc hinges for you on getting Atmos sound, then be sure to call tech support for your set and ask about native Atmos support and pass through. I received a prompt response from LG about my 2017 E7P, which does support both and works well with the Arc. The Sonos app indicates in real time what kind of signal is being transmitted to the Arc soundbar, so there's never any question about whether you're getting Atmos sound or not.
If your TV has eARC: Congrats! Even if your set's internal speaker system isn't Atmos, you should be able to pass through Atmos signals without processing needed to the Sonos Arc from other sources, like Apple TV, a 4K Blu-ray player, etc. Even better is that eArc (and the Sonos Arc) have the bandwidth to handle native Atmos/Dolby True HD signals, which will give you the very best sound quality. Currently, though, you'll only get native Atmos from 4K Blu-ray discs, but not from any of the streaming services.
Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope you find this helpful in making a buying decision. I do try to answer questions in the comments section if any are posted.
