ACTUAL DIMENSIONS & CAPACITY -- WOOPS CHANGE OF PLANS - PROS
This is a review on the 14 x 14” size, white Countryside Tubs. I’m not being paid or receiving anything for this review. I would have ordered the bigger size had I had the measurements I’ll give in this review. Still, they are nice. Here’s what I do really like about the tubs:
Color us a true bright “white (not off-white or creamy white)
The plastic is a “matt” finish – not glossy. (Yeh)
The design is one I like (each to their own) and they will look nice once planted on my porch.
Easily removable small sticker inside pot says “Made in USA” – and I did check out the actual company (Novelty Manufacturing Co on tub bottom label) and they ARE a plastic fabricator with a manufacturing plant in PA.
The 4 planters arrived within 2 days of ordering and they arrived in separate boxes even though the tubs do fit inside each other and could have been put in 1 larger box. So all in perfect condition. No scratches or rub marks.
Two pre-inserted knock-out holes in bottom of tub for drainage.
White – not dark – so absorbs less sun – so soil stays cooler in our hot summers in Central California.
Good price for the size.
Can’t speak to the plastic not yellowing over time. We’ll see.
Molded corners and bottom appears to be strong.
Note: My measurements (below) are slightly different than the manufacturer’s website – but I’m measuring for to calculate the inside soil capacity in Gallons (as measured 1 and 2” down from top to allow watering room) and measuring to determine outside dimensions for placement on porch. The depth is very important as I’m growing Vegetables, and this calculation will allow me to determine which plants I’ll put in here, and which I will put out in the garden beds and larger pots.
1) The 14x14” tub holds 5 Gal, but not 5 USABLE gallons. You must leave room at the top to water.
2) If you allow a full 2” room at the top soil-free to give you ample room to water, then this is a 4 GALLON pot with an interior soil depth of only 9 1/4” – not deep enough (IMHO at least) for the larger green/red/yellow Bell pepper plants that have 12” deep central roots at maturity, but certainly fine for my Jalapenos, certain other smaller hot peppers, and I’ll use also for things like broccoli, radishes, spinach, strawberries, certain onions, lettuce, bok choy etc. Woops – the many Bells will go out in the garden instead.
3) If you allow 1” room at top (soil free) then the soil capacity is about 4.5 Gal and the soil depth is 10 1/4”.
HERE ARE THE ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE TUB
Thickness of Material 1/8”
Height of Legs: 3/4”
Inside square bottom width: 9”
Inside square top width 11 3/4”
Inside height 11 1/4” (measured from middle of sides to very inside top)
Outside top: 14” (11 3/4” inside + two 1” lip overhangs + (2 sides (x) 1/8” material thickness)
Outside bottom of “tub”: 9 1/4 (9” inside + material thickness on two sides)
Outside bottom Leg to Leg: ~ <9” (legs slightly recessed under tub bottom and are hollow.)
Outside Height from floor to top: 12 - 12 1/8” including the leg height
USABLE PLANTING AREA – allowing a 2” SOIL FREE area at top of tub for watering.
Inside bottom width: 9”
Inside top WIDTH ~ 2” down from top: 11 3/8” (11.375”)
Inside height down 2 “ from top: 9 1/4”
