I had the same trouble many others had with the water just leaking out. I thought this was junk. After a couple of frustrating days, I figured it out. Hopefully this will help someone else out: inside the white bucket you will see a red plug and a larger black one. The larger black one secured the bucket to the bottom part of the waterer, it should be screwed down tight. The red plug should be removed... it's what lets the water drain into the trough. Between trough and the bucket, under the bucket... is a floater that allows the water to flow. What took me a couple days to figure out was there is a peg on the top of the floater that should be lined up and fit into the hole on the bottom of the bucket that the red plug was removed from. Mine wasn't aligned, you can't tell this by just looking... the water just spills out if its not aligned. You have to unscrew the black plug that holds the bucket to the trough and align the floater peg into the hole and then tighten back down the black plug. And it works perfectly now.
