Good Gods!
Went to the theater tonight just needing to get away from the house and see a flick. I looked over my options and didn't have much interest in anything, but picked GODS OF EGYPT by default. I expected to walk out and go home, but sat through the whole thing and left in better spirits than when I came. Isn't that what movies are mostly supposed to do? I have studied Egyptology and have to commend the script writers for presenting the Egyptian pantheon very close to the mark. The human world was topographically not identical to Egypt, and the crown of the "King" was not the historical pharaonic crown. But, then, the pantheon of Egypt wasn't ever real, anyway. I felt a tinge of Stargate here, but stripped of the science fiction memes. This is just mythology, a form of cultural fantasy with serious themes. I am so tired of remakes and reboots and sequels that it was great to see an original film that stands on its own merits. I thought the sun-god Ra and the Toth the god of wisdom were really hoots. The character development in Horus is really what the film is all about, though; the CGI supported the plot instead of the other way around. Proyas has put J.J. Abrams to shame. Not one planet got blown up, J.J.A.! It's possible to make a film without detonating your franchise! Take that!
