If you're looking for a book for a silly, fun dad to read to his child, this is a great choice. This book definitely focuses on the fun and funny in a father. It does not reflect on a strict or rule abiding dad, with ideas like eating pasta in the bathtub and skipping school to go to the city and eat hot dogs. Also great for a fun dad who travels for work, or even for a dad who is not with his child full time, as there is a part about dad going away and missing the child The whole time. Also great for a musician dad as there is a part about playing rock music really loud. The message is fun with cool dad, and let's face it...the Fun Dad stereotype is one that many dads embrace. There is one more sentimental part about a dad carrying child home when he or she is sleepy. The book is written in the dad's voice which is nice for a father reading to child. Characters slide to a son but could be a girl too. This is the kicker, and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 since it will make or break this book for some. The story is of a father listing all the things he will do for his son because he's his dad, and it ends with him saying that he'll do all these things because that's what HIS dad did for him. You can imagine the various situations in which this ending might not be appropriate. My father in law passed away many years ago and I didn't know how my husband would react to this ending (and didn't know about this ending when I ordered the book) but it made him love the book all the more. I suppose it might be a good way for him to introduce our son to the idea of his late grandfather. That will be his decision to make. That said, I could see how this ending would be fabulous for some, but limiting to others whose fathers have passed or are estranged or they are simply not close with. Love the artwork in this book. Cute and engaging and comical, just enough color and movement to be interesting and fun without being so bright and loud that my 5 month old gets hyped up looking at it before bed. All in all, for us, a great book, touching and fitting for dads whose strong suit is fun. Not appropriate for everyone.
