To pork or not to pork, that is the question.
Bacon curls. Pork rinds. Chicharrones.
Call them what you will, it’s all puffed hog flesh in the end. And puffed hog flesh can be pretty flipping’ tasty.
You’re reading this review because you’re about to take a chance. These things intrigue you. You enjoy pork rinds, much to the chagrin of those around you. You don’t care if your breath smells of rendered hog flesh. No, you welcome it. Keeps the riffraff away.
More on-topic, you’re wondering if pork rinds puffed up in a microwave could possible be any good, right? The concept seems strange.
I’m here to tell you it can be done. Here’s how…
Take a bag of these things and SHAKE it up to separate all the little hard chunks of soon-to-be porkaliciousness. Shake it like a maraca whilst chanting if you must. It makes a nice sound. Now place it in your microwave and blast it on HIGH for between 3 to 4 minutes. DO NOT EXPECT TO HEAR ANYTHING. This ain’t popcorn. These things will puff up silently with no audible crackling, fizzing, popping, or screaming until you open the inflated bag. They’re like ninjas. But they will be done. Don’t think they won’t, like my co-worker who waited for a popping noise and almost burned down our lunchroom.
But are they any good?
I think so. They're not greasy at all. Nor are they soggy or chewy. They are light and VERY crispy. And VERY salty. If you like salt like I like salt, then you’ll love these things. They also have MSG, which amplifies the saltiness and porkiness to insane levels. Some people have qualms about MSG. I’m neither for nor against it. But to put things in perspective, you inhale far worse chemicals every day of your life just by breathing in the tainted air of our industrialized economy.
