I ended up doing a lot of research on the "benefits" of salt lamps before finally settling on this model. I actually purchased 6 of these in one order for holiday gifts - my poor post man... Amazon shipped them all in one box!! It was an EXTREMELY HEAVY package!! Anyway - I will admit that I did what others have done - I licked my finger and taste tested the lamp. Yup it is real salt, and yes I encouraged all the recipients of the lamps to do the same!! Before giving the gifts, and because of some of the reviews about function problems, we unboxed each lamp and plugged them in to ensure that they all worked properly. They did and as promised - each beautiful lamp was stunningly unique. The shapes, the shades of color, and even the lines that ran through the lamps made sure that no two were alike. The switch on the lamp that we decided to keep for ourselves initially did not seem to want to work properly - but after a few moments it worked just fine and haven't given us a single issue since. I chalk that up to user error. Each friend and family member that received one from us has fallen in love with their salt lamp - One even immediately ordered one for someone else! The glowing light that emanates from the salt lamps is soothing, and the dimming aspect makes it even more so. I like being able to have as little or as much as light as I am want. We love this lamp so much that we are planning on buying at least two more of a larger size from Levoit as well. My only concern, and it isn't even really a concern so I didn't knock off a star. Within 2 or 3 days of delivery I received an email from the company asking if I was pleased with my lamps. As I explained in my response that most of them were gifts and that I liked to at least have an opportunity to use a product for at least 14 days before I am asked to submit a review. They seemed to understand my point, sent me an email apologizing and asking me to leave a review after I had had a chance to use the lamps.
