Extremely Disappointed!! (Is there hope??) (UPGRADED - READ EDIT)
I've had this, now, for about a month. I wanted to give it a good, thorough test-drive before writing a review on it.
First let me say I've been an extremely loyal customer of BlueAnt for several years (since the "T" Series headsets) and have absolutely loved the Q2...so much so I recommended it to my 3 siblings who also went and purchased it. For me to give their review would be "hearsay" but suffice it say they've told me they like it.
So when it was time to purchase my next device (my Q2 had finally, after over a year of pretty hard use, physically broke) I was excited about the Q3. I figured with BlueAnt that each release would have to be better than the previous model because this was my experience.
About a hundred bucks later the Q3 arrives and I quite anxiously pull it out of the packing and hook it to charge while scanning the downloadable PDF on the unit so I can be familiar with it. Okay, pretty similar to Q2 so - no big deal.
Once charged I fire it up...instead of making this a continued essay I'll just do the old Pro Con method.
PRO'S:
1. This baby can CRANK THE VOLUME on receive! Wow, that can pretty much hurt my ear if I want to turn it up that far. Well done on that!
2. SUPER clear sound on receive ... AND on transmit. However, the Q2 was amazing on send and probably a 4.5 out of 5 on receive. This is a solid 5 (but not worth the extra $$ if this is the only plus).
3. FAST boot-up! Wow...this baby hits my fone so quick I barely have time to hook it to my ear before it's already telling me the battery status. Nice job!
4. L O N G battery life! I'm impressed on this as well.
5. Very comfortable...however, so was the Q2. So comfortable that I literally forget it's on my ear. I love that about these two models!
So...why only 3 out of 5 stars? Sadly, for me, the cons are bad enough that if I could I would only give it 2.5 stars.
CON'S:
1. Placement of charging connector is absolutely ridiculous! They placed it on a circular part of the device and of course the USB plug is quite flat. I have to fight with it EVERY time to get it to stay in. Barely get it sat down on the desk and POP out it falls so I'm right back to trying to get that thing to stay in. What a PAIN. Again, this alone would not cause the 2.5 stars although I consider this to be a very poor design-flaw and something they obviously didn't spend much time testing. Oh, and the plug is upside down compared to 99% of other devices with the identical adapter. No biggie, but I forget sometimes because I'm so used to plugging devices in one way and have to remember (after hitting it with a mismatch) to flip it over.
Here's the BIGGEST reason for my 2.5 stars - and it's big, and it also is the reason I will not be recommending this to anyone.
2. This thing has some problems! When I get a call in I hear, "Call from...; answer or ignore" (as always).
a. If I say, "Answer" about 50% of the time it doesn't answer. Another (approx) 40% of the time it will say, "Connected" by MY PHONE KEEPS RINGING! Q3 goes silent as it THINKS it's connected, but it's not.
b. If I don't say "Answer" and instead hit the button ONE time to accept the call about 75% of the time it says, "Connected" - the phone also reports that the call is connected but there is no sound!! "Hello? Hello?!" Nothing. I grab the phone and put to ear, "Hello?" Nothing. I have to turn OFF the Q3 and suddenly the call is live on the phone...I apologize for the delay and silence then click back on the Q3 and can proceed with my call.
Understand I'm a senior level hardware tech in the I.T. world...I ain't no slouch when it comes to "those gadget-thingy's!" - I have certainly reset the device and re-paired it back to the Android phone (should have mentioned this is a HTC/Droid based, not iPhone-(anything)).
This is so frustrating that, in all honesty, I almost did 2 stars instead of 3 but the Pro's on this really are strong. However, I will (as stated earlier) absolutely not be recommending this to anyone and I will not be buying any more Q3's for my own use. I hope they continue to make the Q2's because it's still my favorite. Maybe I should stock up while it's still available as a new unit! I LOVE the voice commands of these devices...the clarity, the filtering of background noise, etc.
I welcome feedback.
Edit on June 1, 2013: Just today I found on another review thread they have released a firmware update. I installed the software to my system and the upgrade to my Q3 went flawlessly. I've re-paired the unit to my HTC and now I will wait and see if this resolves the major problems I had with connecting with incoming calls. If this goes well I'll be upgrading my number of stars.
New Edit 6/9/2013: Okay, it's been over a week and so far my Q3 has answered EVERY call perfectly. Apparently the firmware upgrade was successful...I can now recommend this model w/o any real hesitation. I've upgraded my review to 4 out of 5 stars.
Newly discovered but very minor disappointment: If you say, "Phone Commands" it used to say back, "Activating your telephone's internal voice commands" at which point the phone would say, "Say a command" and I would proceed from there. The Q3 has removed the "Activating..." statement. At first I thought it was something else wrong, now I think this has been removed from the Q3 programming. No biggie but when it first happened I didn't understand why there was a few seconds of silence before I heard my phone give the command request.
I think I'm finished with this review, finally! :)
