Good belt grinder with a couple simple mods
like others have said the grinder has too much plastic and the fasteners are weak. the tool rest is small and the overall frame flexes...however, if you're willing to modify it a little it can perform pretty good. The belt speed is good for removing metal. Running thicker belts strains the motor a bit, but it does run ~1/8 inch thick scotchbrite. Overall it's still a decent value even though it needs some upgrades to deserve a spot in my shop. the following mods assumes you have some basic metal fab skills...if not, don't bother reading. modifications. 1st, remove all the plastic guards and throw them away...there is no point to have the outside plastic guard if you intend to change belt quickly. 2nd, cut off the upper and lower portions of the frame that cover the wheels to allow you to use the wheels as grinding surfaces and it allows you to run thicker belts...i prefer the scotchbrite belts. 3rd, at minimum, bolt a small section of 1-1/2 angle to the back of frame to stiffen it. 4th, replace the tool rest. the attached photos show the design that i came up with. if you copy this design, the entire tool rest frame is one piece which make the entire tool very stiff. 5th, replace the back platen with 1/4 inch metal plate or build a new one out of 2-1/4" angle.
