Best Corn Stripper
When it comes to stripping corn off the cob Amazon has gotten a fair amount of money from me while I tried to find the right method for de-cobbing corn. I have tried just about everything sold here, including: - Using a chef's knife. This works well, but kernels go everywhere. - Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper. Gouged the cobs, didn't get much corn, what it did get went everywhere. The solid metal one is hard to control if your hands get even a little wet. - Fox Run Corn Stripper. Flimsy and hard to use. When you do find a cob that fits in the hole, it's hard to control and corn goes everywhere. - Corn Cutter. Gouged the cob. Blade is a pain to adjust. Hard to hold with one hand while trying to run the cob with the other. Never got the hang of this one. More of a pain that it is worth. - Kuhn Rikon Corn Zipper. Like a super sharp veggie peeler. Hard to control, real easy to slice yourself. Corn goes everywhere. - Finally, This OXO Corn Stripper. It cuts the corn without gouging the cob. The container holds a sufficient amount and is easy to empty. I've had no problems with corn escaping. Yes, you can still gouge yourself with this if you are not careful, and a Cut Resistant Glove (in the appropriate size) is recommended. Some corn mess, but a lot less than with other methods. Bottom line: I'm not usually one to have a bunch of unitaskers around, but occasionally I'll find one that really does make a job faster and/or neater. This is one of those gadgets. This one is a winner and a keeper. Update 8/31/15 Just an update to say that I've had this stripper for five years and I'm still happy with it. Last night we used it to strip two dozen ears of beautiful farm fresh corn. With Mrs. Boilermate husking and de-silking the corn and me stripping it we were able to do the whole batch in just about an hour. The reservoir holds about 1/2 to 3/4 of an ear before I had to empty it. There was a small amount of juices squirting as I ran the cob and a few stray kernels escaped but overall the job was done with a minimal amount of mess. When a friend of mine got married this summer this was one of the items on their wish list. I happily bought it and added to the gift basket I put together for him and his new bride.
