Growing Technique Experiment Results
The product came in a timely manner, and there were 132 seeds, 32 more than promised, so thank you for that. There are a couple suggestions scattered around regarding how you should prep that seeds to get the best germination. I did a little experiment to see what worked best. I subdivided the seeds into 3 groups of 44. One I didn't treat at all and just planted. One I did the boiled water technique (pour a small amount of boiling water over the seeds in a small dish and let them sit in the water for 8 hours, then plant). And for the last group I did the seed nicking suggestion, nicking the narrow edge of each seed with a knife. Seeds were planted 3 or 4 to a starter peat pot, about 1/4" under the soil, and the pots were thoroughly wetted and covered and left indoors near a sliding glass door for some light (but not too direct). Results about 1.5 weeks later: Untreated: 5/44 germinated Nicked: Aprox 14/43 germinated (one lost due to nicking process causing it to fly across the room and get lost) Boiled: Aprox 23/44 germinated I expect to get a few more germinations in the next couple days, but this is pretty close to what I expect to end up with when all is said and done. Nicking these seeds is a real pain in the butt. They are very tiny and very hard. Eventually I figured out a process, but it was still difficult. Given that nicking provides more success than nothing, but substantially less success than boiling, and that the boiled water process is WAY simpler, I would absolutely go with the boiled water treatment before planting.
