Thin, Light, Works Great
Before giving my impressions of this filter, I’d first like to decode the product description. First, “XS-Pro” means this is a very slim filter, though it still has threads so you can screw another filter onto it. “Kaesemann” is a filter manufactured by the Kaesemann company, now owned by B+W. They are designed to be more resistant to damage from humidity. “Circular” is a special type of polarizer, distinguished from “linear”; circular is the type you need to use on DSLRs. “Multi-Resistant Nano Coating” provides a layer of protection against dust and water. I installed this filter on my Nikon 50mm lens and headed outside. Note the standard lens cap fits over the filter just fine. For landscape photography, it’s easy to use – on a clear, sunny day, just frame up your shot, then turn the outer ring until the blue of the sky darkens. Turn another 90 degrees, and the effect disappears. This doesn’t mean you should just leave it on all the time, because a polarizing filter costs you 1-2 stops. The filter is also useful for removing light reflections, either through windows or water. Just remember to *always* turn the outer ring as if you were screwing the filter onto your lens, otherwise you may accidentally unscrew the filter and drop it. Overall, this worked exactly as I would expect. In my landscape shots, the blue sky darkened appreciably, and fall foliage colours became more distinct. I’ve included sample photos to show the difference. Because it was so bright out, I didn’t miss the stop of light at all. This is a very high quality optic, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a polarizing filter.
