We LOVE this stuff. It's so easy to use and really foolproof. The darkness depends on how many layers you apply. I recommend at least 24 hours between coats, even more if you live in a humid climate. It is so worth the wait. We clean the area with a denatured alcohol/water mixture, sand lightly to get any top coat off, then we apply the gel stain with a sponge brush and wipe excess off with a sock. Use gloves and wear old clothes for every step!! Any stain that gets on walls, tile, or any other unwanted surface, can be removed easily with a magic eraser pad. After we applied the stain to our liking, and waited for all layers to dry completely, we used a wipe on clear poly. We used the muted kind, not shiny. Although, the seats of the chairs look shiny because we used 3 layers of poly on that area. We applied the poly with a sock as well. We wanted to see through some areas of the stain, so we used a fine metal cleaning pad to buff some areas lightly before applying the poly.
