Fun, Messy, Probably Not Practical
I don't drink soda pop, never have, so the virtues of carbonated beverages are lost on me, but not on my husband, who is an enthusiastic drinker of various seltzers, pops, diet pop, etc. It irked me to have to buy massive quantities of what is, basically, water with carbon dioxide bubbles in it and a few flavorings, and lug these expensive, heavy, bottles home continuously. That's before getting to the negative health and diet impact.
So, in a quest for cheaper ways to give the same effect in a more healthy, less expensive, way, enter the Fizzini. I had looked at the SodaStream in stores, and it just didn't suit what I wanted. I wanted something like Fizzini, which would let me carbonate pretty much any liquid and not take up counter space.
My first attempt at using Fizzini to carbonate lightly sweetened ice tea (think diet soda pop without the artificial sweeteners) made a huge mess, stuff squirted everywhere. Your first attempt probably will, too. But once you get the hang of it, it does work easily, neatly, and effectively.
The biggest downside is that it uses one CO2 cartridge to carbonate a fairly small quantity. BUT, they appear to be standard 8 gram cartridges, so you can find a box of 100 (different brand maker) here on Amazon for as little as 30 cents each cartridge. At this point the price starts to become more economical for quantity of carbonated beverage produced, and the CO2 cartridges are recyclable, so not frightfully wasteful there - you can use your own water and flavorings, and with minor effort produce any flavor you want of soda pop!
