I am no God
It’s not going to last through many summers, but for how much I paid, I would do it again. You should have seen it.
There I was, 8am on a Tuesday. We’ve been in quarantine for three months. No school, no parties, no friends.
The kids are bored enough to mutiny for a 20 minute trip to the filthy Chik Fil A playplace.
I poured my coffee over ice. They paced outside on the patio. They began collecting sticks. It was Lord of the Flies if I didn’t act soon.
I went to the closet and pulled out the parachute, and made my way to the uneasy crowd. All six of them dared me to make a move. I reached into the bag slowly.
No sudden moves.
They were jumpy.
I began to unroll the parachute. The breeze caught it just right and it unfurled upward into the sun like a glorious beacon of rainbow hope. They were stunned for a moment, then erupted into cheers. Someone across the street yelled “SHE DID IT!”
Parents up and down the cul de sac stumbled from their homes carrying coffe cups, squinting in the bright sun, wondering if Christ had returned. But no. It was just me.
And I had conquered the boredom in my hoard of dangerous elementary and toddler aged kids with a victory so complete that even the neighbors' kids bring me wilted dandelions and interesting rocks because they know. Everyone knows.
I have school gym toys.
