Very nice radio-Flawless
I restore Old tube radios and have built High fidelity tube amps and preamps for years. I love tubes and while they can do absolute magic if implemented right, so can solid state. This little radio is proof of that. This radio was built in Nov. 2013, and came packaged really well. Included was the power cord, remote, fm wire attenna ( gold plated- nice touch), the manual in book form and a small silica gel pack in the foam wrapping around the radio- (again a nice touch.) The radio sat in a thick two piece egg carton type support packing inside the box. I do not see this with most electronics. (most are styrofoam fitted on the ends). All of this is quality packaging. I Like. The build quality is flawless. Fit and finish is perfect and no scratches. I attached the supplied attenna, threw the switch to external and fired it up. My first impression was that there is no way this little guy is going to sound that big but I was pleasantly suprised. From top to bottom is great. Maybe a little bassy for some, but I like a good solid bottom end and this thing delivers. It replaced my old 1959 Zenith H884 tube radio on the kitchen counter. It just does a better job. I did not program the alarms yet, but everything else is a breeze. I hooked an i pod in the aux. and fed music through. It works and sounds fine. I have not done anything with the blootooth yet. Like other reviews show, the FM has good selectivity (on par with my 12 tube pilot 670), and excellent sensativity. The Am is nothing to write home about. A pocket radio may do as good,so maybe a good external antenna is needed. I do not listen to AM anyway. The Fm is where this thing shines. When you turn the volume down to your liking, then sit down 10-15 ft. away, it seems like it is a bit louder. This thing carries and fills. I bought the wr-22 because I did not want the White background screen of the wr-2.Nor does the wr-2 come in dark walnut. The wr-22 has a BLACK screen background with a Whitish/blue readout. Really nice at night, plus it is dimmable by three levels or you can black it out. All of the button icons are lit as is the Sangean logo. These lights are also dimmed. The Dark walnut seems to be a laminate done over a thicker peice of wood. (Cabnet). It's not a cheap imitation, and is well done. Polish it with a good funiture polish and it gets richer. Luv it! The front facia is not metal like the w-2 , but is some sort of plastic with a mirror finish. The speaker grill is metal and sturdy. The back is laid out nicely with all the ins and outs. The terminals for the am antenna are not flimsy tabs with screws. They are solid, and tighten firmly. I like. There just isnt anything flimsy about this radio. All in all I am happy. This is a nice peice of kit, and will not disapoint anyone wanting a great sounding, well built table radio. Btw... There has been a few guys claim 10% THD is alot. Not really. What they are not taking into consideration is the fact that the rating is given at FULL POWER@ 100 Hz. There is a bunch of stuff out there that will make more than that at full power@100hz. Most advertised Distortion ratings are given at 1 WATT @ 1k HZ. Why sangean is showing full power@ 100hz is kinda strange. But it is what it is. UPDATE.... I recommend to run this in a few days. The bass tightens up and get's alot better.... And no, it's not my ears getting used to it, most of my builds and restorations do the same thing to some extent.Turn the Bass, Treble, and loudness all the way up and tune to a rock station at moderate volume, let it settle in for a few days, then adjust to taste. It's suprising.....
