Voyage Case Review: A Sane Alternative to Amazon's Crazy Prices
I have always bought Amazon's leather cases for my Kindles. Yes, they were pricey, but the designs were sleeker and featured at least one really useful feature that competitors couldn't match. I had planned to do the same for my new Kindle Voyage, but when I saw the $60 price tag--a full 50% increase over the already expensive leather case for the Paperwhite!--well, it just seemed crazy, so I decided to look for an alternative, and discovered this leather Voyage case from HOTCOOL which I just received on November 5th--I'm not sure why Amazon is claiming a much later release date. At ten bucks plus shipping (raised to nineteen dollars since I bought it), it's looks like the deal of the century compared to Amazon's case, but is it the case for you? Here's what you need to know... PROS: * Sleek, thin and lightweight (3.2 oz) design, but still protective. * The Voyage snaps in easily and securely, and the case fits its contours like a glove. BUT... see my first Con below. * Except for the leather used (see Cons below), this has the fit, finish and feel of a high-quality product that compares very favorably with my Amazon leather case for the Paperwhite, except it's lighter and less bulky--which is what I wish my PW case had been all along! In particular, you'll appreciate the attention to detail in the cutout for the Voyage power button. It was designed to have an elegant, polished look instead of just being a circular hole punched into the plastic. * The magnetic cover closure works well, sleeping and waking the Voyage as advertised. The cover also folds to the back neatly and easily. CONS * I'll start with my biggest complaint first, since it's nearly a dealbreaker for me, and may be one for you. Once it's snapped in, it's very tough to get the Voyage out of this case. More difficult, even, than getting Amazon's leather case off my Paperwhite. The thin plastic shell is surprisingly rigid, so there's much less flex than you'd imagine, plus the thinness of it gives you very little to grasp as you try to pop it off. I'm hoping that it loosens its grip over time, and I deducted a half-star for this. (Hard to be super critical of a case that holds something securely.) * The product description makes no mention of this being PU leather (leather scraps bonded with polyurethane), but it sure doesn't smell or feel like all natural leather. I'm not saying that it feels bad or cheap, because it doesn't, but the leather on my Amazon PW case definitely feels more luxe. But of course, there's a limit to what you can expect for ten bucks. I deducted a half-star for this. ONE FINAL NOTE: I've seen several sellers on Amazon now offering what looks like the identical case, minus the HOTCOOL logo, at much cheaper prices. The Omoton case, for example, is just $7.99 with Prime shipping. Whether it actually IS the same case, I can't say for sure, but the photos look identical in every way, so you may want to check that out. I went with the HOTCOOL brand anyway because of all the great reviews, and because they emphasize their customer service. Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope you find it helpful in making a purchase decision. I do take the time to answer questions posted in the comments section.
