Beginners don't worry - this is a dream to setup and use!
This is a great rig! Let me preface this with my experience level...advanced beginner woodworking in general, VERY beginner at joints. My experience this far in joints has been plain butt joints and miter joints. Though daunting, I wanted to learn pretty (and stronger) joints. So I ordered this rig. Even after watching a youtube video prior to ordering it, I still was intimidated at the thought. I bought 3 6'-1x6 boards for practice, assuming a steep learning curve. Not. At. All. First shot out of the gate, with maybe 30 minutes setup time - KEY - I put together a very passable through dovetail box. Not perfect, but having NEVER cut dovetails before? ...I'm not ashamed!
Like I mentioned above, setup is KEY. Again - thought it would be difficult, but if you READ THE MANUAL - yes guys, we need to read the directions! - setup is super easy to understand and execute. One thing I might note - there is a misprint in the manual for directions to through dovetails...when cutting the pins, it calls for guide 42046, however the supplied (and correct) guide is stamped 42047. Slight moment of panic I was missing a part, but as I said, part 42047 worked correctly. It also indicates the bits are not included for the mini joints, but they are...I assume a generic 'series' manual to cover the jigs that do not include the additional templates to be the issue in the latter case. Not enough of a problem to deduct a star for either issue, but something that the technical writers for Porter Cable might take note of for correction.
I see this getting much use...definitely a steal at $180. All in all, this is a great rig, and the only con is I waited this long to jump into the world of advanced joints.
