Drive is amazing! Software needs work...
After reading a review stating the drive is "Disposable" and "Not ready for prime time", I felt I should clear some things up. There is nothing wrong with the drive. Mine is installed on my Lenovo Y510P and running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 like a champ. HOWEVER, I did end up having to return my first one for another one due to what I would call poor documentation and/or software The problem is that this drive isn't really 2 drives... as far as Windows is concerned. It's 1 drive with 2 types of memory. Windows doesn't distinguish the SSD memory as 1 drive and the mechanical as another drive. This is why the drive ships with the mechanical 1TB essentially "turned off". This allows you to install Windows on the SSD, or clone your current OS to the SSD, then once Windows is installed you can run the WD software to "turn on" the mechanical 1TB. The thing that needs to be fixed is that there should be some kind of BIG POP UP WARNING when you run the WD software to get the 1TB up and running. The warning should read "WARNING: BEFORE DOING A RE-INSTALL OF WINDOWS BE SURE TO RUN THIS SOFTWARE AGAIN TO UNINSTALL AND RETURN DRIVE TO FACTORY STATE!!!". Or something along those lines. I was not aware of this... So, this is what happened. 1. Physically installed drive. 2. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from USB stick on SSD. 3. Ran WD software to make the 1TB mechanical active and drive D. 4. Found all updated drivers for my laptop. 5. Decided to do a final clean re-install of Windows. 6. Deleted all partitions during Windows installation. 7. After Windows was done installing again, I realized I had screwed myself and was now stuck with the drive forever seeing itself as a singular 1.12 TB drive..... all because I didn't re-run the WD software so the 1TB partition wouldn't show up during Windows 7 re-install. Western Digital: If you read this, PLEASE ADD A HUGE WARNING SOMEHOW... OR MAKE THE SOFTWARE BE ABLE TO SET THE DRIVE BACK TO FACTORY STATE EVEN WHEN IT IS CONNECTED EXTERNALLY THROUGH THE CABLE YOU PROVIDED WITH THE DRIVE! Been buying stuff on Amazon for years and never wrote a review,,, now I have this super long winded one. I just hope it helps someone. ANY QUESTIONS? Just ask. Happy to help. -Aaron
