A changed dog - this collar was a lifesaver.
My newest dog was having some trouble. She responded well to clicker training her tricks as she loves to please. However, she was not understanding "No!". The whole idea confused her. She couldn't understand exactly what she was doing wrong and why she was getting the "No!". On top of that her attention span was very tiny - Rat Terrier/Jack Russel/Aussie Shep mix. We were starting to get frustrated. Things were getting destroyed, people were getting jumped on and nibbled, food was being stolen. It was total chaos. After attempting other training methods (positive reinforcement, clicker) and even increasing her daily exercise her behavior did not improve. I truly believed it was because she did not understand what we wanted from her. She was a pound puppy after all - she had never been in a home or had any rules.
This collar was suggested to me by an animal cop I met at the pet store. I was wary of shock collars because of all the bad press they receive. Well, if he is suggesting it it must not be technically inhumane, right? This one had plenty of settings. I made sure to test it out on myself before putting it on my pup - I did not want to subject her to anything I found too painful. We found a level that worked for her (and me) - one that gets her attention but does not cause excessive pain. It's L5 for anyone wondering. When triggered the device causes her to walk away from whatever behavior she is exhibiting. She does not yelp or cry or look hurt. It just distracts her. And that is exactly what I wanted from this device.
Could someone potentially hurt their animal with it? Probably. The highest setting (H8) REALLY hurt me. It is important to read the instructions to find the correct fit and level for your dog. If you're unsure about the level of shock test it on yourself.
The yellow button delivers the level you selected. The +2 button delivers two levels above that level. I suppose the +2 button would be appropriate in an emergency situation where you really, really needed the dog's attention and the regular level was not effective. However, I have not needed it yet.
The green button just emits a noise. It's actually our favorite feature of this collar. We have trained it as a "return" command. Once she hears the noise she knows to come find me and take a seat. It is great for the dog park or getting her inside.
After using this collar her behavior and her demeanor has completely changed. The best way to describe it is that she was unsure before. Nervous. She didn't know why she kept getting in trouble and she was afraid that she would mess up. I know, I'm probably reading too much into my dogs behavior, I apologize. After using the collar she has really lightened up - she wags her tail almost constantly and always looks pleased. Much happier and more content.
