My six year old daughter loves it and I love that I'm not playing Candyland anymore
My six year old daughter loves it and I love that I'm not playing Candyland anymore:) This is a game she looks forward to playing w/ Daddy, so of course it gets 5 stars. It's pretty simple, you roll higher than the # on the monster and you get treasure and them kids love treasure! After reviewing tons of house rules in the Amazon reviews, I have compiles what I felt are the best and added my own. Here is my complete set of house rules, which adds depth to the character classes and more importantly, incorporates 4, 12, and 20 sided dice. You will also need one miniature for the winner to beat a BIG monster at the end. #1 First off, you need two twelve sided dice of different colors: One for the player and one for the monster. Instead of rolling two six sided dice, you have now graduated to one twelve. It's just more fun to roll a dodecagon. #2 Those pesky magical swords just aren't magic enough. They're nearly impossible to get a +2 to damage, the fix: Double the range for all magic swords. So if you have to roll a 12 to make the magical sword +2, now an 11 or 12 will make it +2. A 10-12 now becomes an 7-12. And yes, use the 12 sided die for this. #3 To find a secret door, your character needs to roll a 3 or 4 on a Four sided die (50% chance vs the rules with a 33% chance of success). This speeds up the pace of the game, because it is not fun to keep missing your turn trying to find an opening. I spent too much of my teenage years trying to do that. #4 A problem with this game, is the kids have too much fun playing that they never want to turn in their treasure to the Grand Hall to win the game. To encourage compliance, the rules for the end of the game has changed. Draw a level 5 monster. This monster starts off in the level 5 hall and gets a turn each round, uses all 5 of its moves stalking towards the first player who reached their winning amount of gold, the player will have to fight this monster, but gets to roll a twenty sided die when they battle. This allows your kid to finally beat a level 5 guy and they get a level 5 treasure to add to their stash after the battle. If there is a dash next to what they have to roll, then a 12 or higher wins. Special Character Rules Rogue: #1: Automatically finds secret doors #2: Can evade any monster instead of attacking. To evade, they must roll a 3 or 4 on a 4 sided die. If they roll a one or a two, then the monster still attacks. #3. Starts the game with 2 teleport spells and can replenish upon visiting the grand hall. Fighter: #1 If the fighter misses an attack, he can roll a 4 sided die and attack again by rolling a 4. Cleric: #1 Starts the game with 1 teleport spell #2 If a monster hits the cleric, the cleric can roll a 4 sided die and if s/he rolls a 4, then s/he doesn't get hit by the monster. This is because clerics wear heavy armor and are good at healing.
