All the negative press here is partly accurate in my experience but, overall, I am pretty okay with this bed and just bought more for other areas. Agree that it is more like 2 - 3" thick, but don't notice any smell and my 140 pound great dane likes it. I have been teaching him to get on the couch when told he can and now it is a 50/50 chance that he will even want on the couch. About half the time he heads for the new bed on the floor in the living room instead and cannot even be coaxed to come visit. It does not feel like memory foam, but my dog likes it and, if he likes it, I like it, since it was for him. He doesn't act stiff when he sleeps on it and I repeat, he actually will frequently choose this over the couch no less. All in all, I think this is a decent product. Only wish was they made a larger size yet (as you can see from the pic...). UPDATE: I measured and it actually IS four inches... :)
