Somewhere within the 12 hour span that it took me to read this book I had an epiphany. I'm not sure if Colleen Hoover wrote this book hoping that it would be life changing for some people, but I can tell you without a doubt that something inside of my soul changed today. I'm not sure how long it'll last, because my life is far from perfect; my marriage a constant bumpy road. But I can tell you that I felt something profound while reading this book, and this life changing feeling hasn't dimmed its light just yet. You see, I read this book as my husband slept and my children ran around screaming and fighting and needing me every five minutes. At first I was annoyed. At first I was dreading my husband waking up and ruining my reading time. At first I was annoyed with my kids as they yelled my name on repeat. But the farther I got into this book, the less annoyed I became by my children being needy. And I was no longer dreading my husband waking up, but instead, I looked forward to seeing him. I realized that reading about the struggles of a marriage is exactly what I needed in order to appreciate the love that my husband and I have created together. I know that this isn't much of a review, but I don't want to focus too much on how amazing the writing was, or how Colleen Hoover is one of the greatest authors of all time. I'd say those things are pretty obvious by now. But I just want to shine the light on how absolutely life altering a simple, fictional story can be. How amazing it is that an author can create characters that feel so real and relatable. It's the reason that I've devoted so much of my life to reading books. It's the reason why I will forever read every single one of Colleen Hoover's books. Because she gets us all. She writes stories that can literally change our lives. And hopefully by reading this book you will feel some sort of profound resolution within yourself as well, because we all deserve to shine the light on all of our perfects. Even if it's just for today.
