To replace or NOT to replace...
I've read reviews where people have said they cut electronic chips from one filter and replaced them on their current filter to "fool" their appliance into thinking a new filter was installed. I read another review that says your refrigerator will no allow water to flow or to make ice once the filter counts down to zero days remaining. In my case, neither of these claims are true.
I ordered this direct replacement filter for my GE refrigerator (Aug 2018) which we've owned for just over 6 months. Apparently, the appliance counts down the number of days and provides a warning that the filter is coming due for replacement. A nice reminder feature, but it doesn't take your source of water into account...i.e. are you on a well, city water, or if you already have a reverse osmosis filtration system in place. In my case, I have the water to the appliance coming from a reverse osmosis system. The water flowing through the filter in the appliance is already "pharmaceutical-grade" filtered water. I dare say that my filter does NOT need to be replaced every 6 months...if ever! We are now seeing the warning from our refrigerator saying we're 14 days overdue for changing out the filter...and the water continues to flow and it produces ice. I'll be ignoring the warning on my refrigerator from now on.
