First impression: disapointment, 3 months later: acceptance
First of all, I apologize for any typos in this review. My new kindle fire HD does not have a functioning autocorrect feature in the silk browser. It works in other parts of the device, but not with silk. I am hoping that this will be fixed with an update.
One of the main reasons I upgraded from the regular kindle fire (which I love, love, love) is that this came with a camera. Does it have any apps to use the camera? Nope. Just Skype. I thought I could use it like a webcam and take some still shots or video, but apparently not.
Amazon decided to can the favorites shelf at the bottom of the screen (in portrait mode, even though it is shown in the above product photos) and replace it with ads and other recommended items. I can call up my favorites by pressing an icon, but what's the point? I might as well search through the carousel.
Maybe this isn't a big deal, but I'm very disapointed that the facebook app is gone. I know I can open it in my browser, but I liked having it accessible at the touch of a button. They also did away with youtube.
The email app is a disappointment, too. On the original fire, my emails were optimized to be viewed on one screen. Now I have to zoom out and scroll around to read an email. They also move the delete button and you can't finger swipe to move to the next message. When I use my fire primarily for reading, facebook, and email and Amazon has only nailed one of these features; what am I supposed to think?
Another thing: I like to touch the power button to check the time on the lock screen. Now, it only shows advertisements. Whatever. I hate the ads. But could they at least put something helpful on that screen like a clock??
Also, there is no indicator light to tell me when this is finished charging. I don't want to leave it plugged in longer than necessary, but I now have to power it on, open the device settings and see if it is done charging. Fail!
My husband was gracious enough to let me take the upgraded kindle fire HD and he has my original fire. I really, truly hope that Amazon can fix some of the glaring problems with this new model, or I will have to return this and downgrade.
Update 9/15:
I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Amazon. While their customer service representative was very kind and helpful, only one of my problems was resolved. There is a facebook app in the app store, you just have to scroll WAY down to find it.
Autocorrect has been disabled in the silk browser. This is absolutely ludicrous! The autocorrect feature actually works very well: everywhere except THE INTERNET!
If you pay $15 to disable the ads, then you get to see time on your home/locked screen. Would it be too much trouble to add that on there? Even for those of us stuck looking at ads?
As of right now, they will not be giving us the option to fix the favorites at the bottom of the screen.
The customer service rep did say that he would forward my feedback to Amazon. I hope they take note of these things. I really want to love this thing as much as/more than my original fire.
Update 9/18:
The camera actually works with the facebook app. This is a nice bonus but I'm disappointed that Amazon isn't promoting.
I am still annoyed to the point of being angry that autocorrect won't work in Silk. I have contacted Amazon for assistance with this matter, but they haven't received enough feedback that this is a problem for others. Please let them know if this bothers you.
I purchased the Poetic hardback case for the Fire HD and the cover powers my device on when I open it and off when I close it. This makes the button placement less of a problem.
Come on, already, Amazon! Start making some changes so I can like this thing!
Update 12/7:
This week's update finally fixed autocorrect in Silk!
I have been given the option to turn off recommendations at the bottom of the screen, but this doesn't bring my favorites up. I still wish I could have them fixed at the bottom.
There's.still no clock on the home screen, but I have taken advantage of at least $15 worth of special offers since I bought this, so I consider that a win.
Many of my gripes have not been resolved, but I have gotten used to the way this fire works and I'm less bothered by it .
