These work. I didn't think they would but they do.
First of all, I'd like to introduce myself: I'm a big skeptic. Nice to meet you.
I don't believe everything I read, and I regularly doubt the magical curative properties of snake oils unless biasly testing them...
...meaning I try them with intention to prove them wrong. If I can't, then, well, they work.
So here's the story:
I'm now in the IT department and the new lighting and the screens I'm looking at are just too harsh. Bright white with a blueish hue. Was killing me. Headaches, eyestrain - and I've only been doing this for a month. I've never been this uncomfortable. Plus the fact that I had LASIK was a concern - was I destroying my now perfect eyesight?
So I do a Google search on what this could be and was surprised to hear about Digital Eye Strain becoming a common thing.
A coworker of mine noticed what I was researching and let me try on his Gunnars. Again, looking at yellow-tinted glasses made me smirk, but he assured me this is what he found to alleviate the issue. OK fine. I put them on, and was surprised how fast the headache went away. I went back and forth on it, seeing if yellow-tinted glasses were the solution, but no, it's the anti-glare and somewhat blue-blocking properties that stop the discomfort. I tried Blu-blockers, Maui Jims with HT lenses and Rose lenses and the yellow glasses. Either too dark (sunglasses) or too yellow (I mean shooting-glass yellow). I tried his Gunnars back on. Yep, problem went away.
Too expensive. Ain't spending that much on Gunnars, especially when they styles are a little more funky than I would have liked (I could either look like a 15-year old serious gamer or Skrillex). I looked around. There was an article on Lifehacker's website about Gamma Ray being an inexpensive alternative, so I looked into it. Found these on Amazon.
These are lightweight and fit me perfectly. I would suggest finding glasses somewhere and getting the measurements, as I did. I almost picked a pair too big or too small. They come with a cleaning cloth and a really nice hard case.
Slight yellow tint to lenses, but really just takes a slight hint of the blue out. Literally from minute one these made a difference.
Still skeptical? Not really. I'm wearing them now and I'm not feeling any of the effects I had before.
I take them off - headache and eye strain within minutes if not seconds.
Geek is a style now, and ok, I'll be geek. Fine with me. Better to FEEL GOOD than to LOOK GOOD, right?
UPDATE:
Had them for two weeks. Wearing them every day, and the headaches are GONE. No eye strain, nothing. Tried them while watching TV, and they are AMAZING for movies like "Oblivion" or "Fargo" ...anything where there is bright sky or snow - really kills that harsh white. Great for flourescent lighting on paper or other white surfaces - again, takes the edge off the bright.
Barely notice them on...in fact, I forget to take them off when I step away from my computer.
