About the best cheap mid-rise briefs
I'm pretty picky about underwear, and I'm always looking for something better, so I'll try different brands to see how they fit. I will say my everyday favorite are 'dad briefs' from Jos. A. Bank, the suit store. They don't make the ones I like anymore, which are really well constructed of the best materials, well-tailored so there's no gapping, always soft and long-lasting - but no longer made, and dumb-expensive if you have to buy them at list. And, they're 'dad-briefs' so high-riding and very full cut - but so, so comfortable. Just the best. But sometimes I have to wear tighter clothes, and that 'dad' fit gets to be too much, so I was looking for a lower-riding pair of briefs for those occasions. These were recommended, so I started a Prime account just to try them. The other reviewers were right - go a size up, as they're kinda tight to begin with, and being a nice, soft cotton, they shrink some. I'm a 40" waist and had to go to the XXL which means the waistband is just a little loose. But my big 'no go' with briefs is gapping around the legs - due to bad design and/or cheap elastic. Fruit of the Loom and Hanes are the worst, but there are many offenders. In fact, I would say most briefs fail in that regard, very few are wearable after a long day working, because the cheap fabric gets sloppy and the elastic was deficient to begin with, but at the end of the day you're falling out all over the place. I like looser underwear, so I don't buy a size down, and I expect no gapping. I'm usually disappointed, even with quality brands like Jockey. I would say that bad briefs design is responsible for a lot of guys moving to boxer-briefs. Anyway, the Amazon Essentials are tailored such that THEY DON'T GAP AT THE LEG - which is great. They're kinda low-rise, but lots of guys will probably like that, with today's fashion. I kinda go for the 'old man' loose pants with suspenders look (sized up so 'they fit when you sit') so they are incredibly comfortable, though you may not impress the gal on the next bar stool. Oh yeah, the briefs ... the waistband is nice, the fabric is decently soft, the leg elastic works. But remember to go a size up.
