Easy to modify for Cat/Dog Door
This is a great value! I am only slightly handy (can read directions) and did not have a drill. I put it together myself with ONLY A PHILIPS SCREWDRIVER. I have wimpy wrists and hands and still did it! It did take a couple of hours but I danced a little and talked on the phone while building it, so there's that. Would have been half the time if I had a drill. Either way, it is completely easy to do on your own. My house had an old wall dog door in it when I bought it and so I was able to line up the catio to allow access through the door without building a tunnel or anything. No extra cutting or anything! Here are the modifications:
When I attached the upper and lower level, I flipped the lower level to the opposite side (doors opposite sides from each other). This way, the little gray cat-shaped door could just be fixed in the open position to line up with my old dog door. I had to put the catio on pavers so it would be tall enough to line up to give enough room for the kitties to get through. I just set the catio up against the exterior wall of my house and the roof line hit it just right, with less than 2 inches of open space (see pics).
Moved Shelf G at the top of the lower level over to the opposite side (just unscrewed the two wooden wedges and re-screwed them on the other side). You pretty much have to do this if you flip the upper and lower level, otherwise the cats can't access the top shelf with the little house).
Discarded the wheels. The only portion of this build that I needed assistance with was lifting it onto the pavers to line up with the dog door.
Discarded the black mat on the bottom (after I took the pics). It's not pretty and the gray wood floor looks much better. The black mat is "for ease of cleaning" so I'll keep it on hand if I notice an issue. However, my cats are not living in there, just visiting.
Tip: the directions don't really emphasize which side of the panels are outside and which are inside. I mistakenly put one of the panels inside out AND upside down and had to undo the screws and redo it twice before I got it right. It was probably the dancing and the phone conversations that distracted me. The wooden triangles go on the OUTside and the little wooden strips to hold up the shelves on the bottom and shelf G go on the INside.
Now I just have to get the cats to like it! They have figured out how to get in and out but mostly they want out. I just finished building it last night so hopefully it will grow on them. They are always wanting to run outside and I am hoping this gives them some outdoor satisfaction. Cheers!
