Protects but you need to use a lot of it
Yes, it will make material water resistant, but you can't miss any spots. This means you can't just spritz it like an air freshener or just give it a light dusting, you need to totally saturate what you want to protect. When it goes on it makes the material look wet, you need it to have that consistent wetness throughout to ensure the material is protected. You will be spraying pretty close to the material about 6 inches and under, otherwise the aerosol will disburse the product all over. You will be able to cover an absolute maximum of 10 sq feet per can. At 10$ a can, it gets pretty pricey. How do I know you need to spray this way? When one can only barely covered two cushions, I tried to save some money and did a light dusting of the third cushion and let it dry. I sprayed the two properly treated cushion and the third one with my garden hose. The water just beaded on the properly treated cushions and I could just tilt the cushions and it came rolling off. On the dusted cushion, it beaded in some spots and was absorbed in others resulting in a splotchy half wet, half dry cushion that looked like a Jackson Pollock painting that I had to let dry and redo. I took off a star because they are so intentionally vague about how much area you can cover with a can.
