As long as you follow some simple common sense rules, these are great humidifiers!
I've been using whole house humidifiers for years. This one has been in my house for almost seven years. With a complete end-of-year cleaning, and faithfully using the humidifier anti-bacterial/fungus, we have had trouble free service.
1. You have to change the filters every year. The best thing is when you know you will end its use for the season, take out the filters and toss them immediately. Do not let then fester in the unit.
2. Take the base and outside, rinse it out with a hose. Put in a little bleach and rinse again. Let it air dry outside.
3. Make sure you take off all the caps on the bottles for storage. We usually take them off, let them dry for a couple hours, (the seals, mainly), and than put them in a sealed plastic bag and toss them into the bottom so we don't lose them. The bottles can be rinsed and let to air dry in the unit after draining.
4. Unplug it for the summer.
On restarting:
1. Put in new filters, available here on Amazon.
2. Make sure you have a fresh bottle of anti-bacterial/fungus. (Don't buy the flavored stuff, some of it does not keep the bacteria and fungus away.)
3. Fill the bottles and add the chemicals, let them fill the bottom of the tank, not you.
4. Set it as you see fit, (we use either 45% or 50%, lowest speed)
5. Let it run and enjoy.
Ours has performed wonderfully over the years, but for a while it was hard to find the filters. Also, the filters are square, and the place where they ride is slightly curved and they are a little hard to get in.
Overall, a great humidifier.
