The mic has been very reliable so far. It does produce a fair amount of noise, but nothing comparable to using your camera's built in mic. It is omni-directional so it will pick up background noise in all directions. But as long as it is clipped to your shirt, the background noise will not over power your voice. It does pick up wind as well, but that can be reduced by clipping the mic backward (on the inside of your shirt) or buying a separate attachment for wind reduction. Check the video for sound quality. Update: I found that if I set the levels correctly, the amount of noise is much less using my Tascam DR-05 recorder. But I actually starting using Adobe Audition to remove the noise from the Audio. It takes less than a minute, and I find that I don't care to, or need to do any audio corrections after that. So the Sony mic, in addition to Adobe Audition's noise correction, has proved to be a winning combo for me. Couldn't be happier with the purchase.
