Amazingly Accurate Unscientific Test Results
Got my Flex today to replace the Fitbit One that I lost last weekend. Here are the results of my unscientific testing. I walked the same path twice using Endomondo (a GPS based activity tracking app) to track my distance. I'm right handed and had the Fitbit strapped to my left (hereafter my Fitbit Wearing Arm, "FWA"). ***TEST #1: Normal stride with my FWA as relaxed as possible (i.e., just swinging at my side): Distance traveled according to Endomondo: 1.78 miles Steps taken according to Fitbit: 3,564 Average steps per mile: 1.898.87 ***TEST #2: Normal stride, while holding and regularly sipping a coffee in my FWA: Distance traveled according to Endomondo: 1.80 miles (I did walk slightly further) Steps taken according to Fitbit: 3,393 Average steps per mile: 1,885.00 Wow! I'm pretty freaking impressed. The difference between my normal stride and my coffee holding/sipping stride was only 4 steps per mile! Tomorrow I'm going to try another test or two and then update. If anyone has any test suggestions, I'm all ears. EDIT: more tests below. I'm almost tempted to give it 5 stars just for the accuracy but I really miss the "floors climbed" feature of my Fitbit One. I think I'll give it a cool 4.5 stars for now. Oh, and thank's to reviewer D.Graves for pointing out that you can change you stride length. I probably never would have even checked for a setting without reading that. For anyone curious, the setting is located in your profile page at fitbit.com (it took me way to long to find the setting, even though I was specifically looking for it). Edit: I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to sync directly through bluetooth with my phone (Nexus 4). I just checked their website and it only says it syncs with "NEW select Android devices (Samsung Galaxy S III , Note II)." Kind of a bummer but not really a big deal for me. The LEDs tell me a good enough approximation for how close I am to my goals and I don't have a problem waiting until I get home to find out exactly how many steps I've taken, but I thought it was worth mentioning for anyone who wants to know exactly how many steps they've taken at any given minute. UPDATES BELOW. I will add more if I find anything useful. ***TEST #2.5: I just spent an hour watching TV on the couch and drinking beer using my FWA. I took one bathroom break and also changed my clothes. In that time, my Fitbit recorded only 31 steps. I definitely didn't count but that seems pretty accurate. If anyone has any other lazy time test suggestions, I'm all ears. ***TEST #3: I have a Stamina In-Motion Elliptical Trainer that counts your "steps" as you use it. The elliptical counted 4,000 steps and the Flex counted 3,975. I think a difference of only 25 steps is more than great; it's an error rate of less than 1% (the Flex was off by 0.625% to be exact). TERRIBLE SLEEP TRACKING[?] EDIT: I was under the (incorrect) impression that the Flex automatically tracks your sleeping. I did some research and found out that you actually have to tap the top of the Flex 5 times in 1-2 seconds before bed to activate sleep tracking, and then tap it again 5 times in the morning when you wake up to switch back to normal activity tracking. I don't recall seeing this anywhere in the setup manual, but I did find this info tucked away in their website. I will try it out over the next few nights (if I remember!).
