Exactly What I Needed
Sure, this is a reboot, with more space to expand, both in the sense of perspective that comes with time, and screen space to develop more detailed character development and plots. But this was EXACLY what I wanted and needed. As a (white) tomboy femme/genderfluid person who lettered in softball and came of age in the 1990s, ALOTO was a movie that I deeply connected with. I’ve rewatched it dozens of times, and even though I adore it, I’ve always been disappointed with 1) the silence on segregation and white supremacy that was fundamental to the period but utterly ignored by the filmmakers (aside from one token moment); and 2) the complete lack of actual queerness, Rosie O’Donnel and various hot butch movements notwithstanding. This is a clearer, broader, and frankly better take, and is not just forcing more thoughtful social commentary for commercialized wokeness - it’s actually just a more detailed and better take. Thank you! 🙏
