Exactly What You Think It Is
In the best way, this album is just what you'd expect: It's latterday Fleetwood Mac album without Stevie Nicks. Certainly the dominant sound here is that of Lindsey Buckingham's guitar and studious production. While nothing is as striking as this duo's early collaborations like World Turning (notably, "Too Far Gone" references that classic a bit with its guitar line), nevertheless the same dynamic comes through: McVie's gentle melodies are toughened by Buckingham's edginess; Buckingham's self-indulgence is tempered by McVie's softness. This is a great thing, and it's one of the reasons why Fleetwood Mac was one of the best bands of all time. Do we miss the added spirituality and pomp that Stevie Nicks could have brought? Sure. But that doesn't make this album lacking or incomplete. It just means (like on the Say You Will album) that we're getting music made by this particular combination of people. I love Buckingham's work with the band as well as his solo work, and this is somewhere in between. From the first song to the last, this is just what I thought it would be. Great musicianship and songwriting, warm, inviting songs made by people who genuinely care for each other and believe in the power of music.
