Best of Its Kind on the Market
I have been using the Racor bike hanger for hanging a variety of bicycles in garages in three separate homes over 17 years. I currently hang 12 bicycles on a rear wall of a garage, each using a Racor Solo. (The only bicycle I cannot use with the Racor hanger is a Specialized Fat Boy with enormous wheel depth.)
These hangers are the best. No damage has ever occurred to any bicycle, component, or wheel using them. I have hung lightweight custom road bikes with custom wheels and heavier hardtail mountain bikes with stock wheels (and everything in between: track bikes, fixies, cyclocross, and touring).
Installation is the most critical element to satisfactory performance of the Racor Solo. I use 1 x 10 lumber cut to length, leveled and secured to studs in multiple locations as a base over drywall.(Battery operated stud finders work best to locate the center of the stud.) I use a height of 90" from the floor to the top of the 1 by 10 to permit a car's front end to park up to the bottom wheel under either the saddle or handlebar of each bike. Typically, I attach each leveled Solo at a stud's center through the 1 x 10 (a 1 by 8 can also be used but it does not make for a finished look). Each hanger is installed on center through the 1 by 10 into a stud, thus every 16". The bikes are hung in an alternating fashion: For example, first front wheel, then the next bike rear wheel, then front wheel, and so on.
Keeping tire air pressure reasonable during storage prevents flat spot on the tire. Bottom wheels tend to leave tire marks on any untreated wall surface. As noted by others PVC cut outs, bike trays, and other devices can prevent those marks. Or permit the marks as on wishes. Bikes should be suspended from the Racor Solr rather than resting a bottom wheel on the floor. The whole idea of the hanger is to get it out of the way while being accessible.
