Least of the evils that are modern day humidifiers
Probably spent two hours of painstaking research and review reading, before I grudgingly landed on the Honeywell Easy to Care.
You’d think that after the human race has lived thru more than a hundred years’ worth of common knowledge that people flourish more in an environment with at least 40% humidity, humidifiers would be a lot less awful.
Anywho, this is why I landed on this model:
Simplistic design: Another reviewer stated that it was a glorified bucket with a fan, like that was somehow a bad thing. There are a total of 2 pieces (+ a filter) to this unit, and that is not a bad thing. I’ll let other people have the fancy ones, with separate fill tanks and stupid little lids that get lost, break, and/or need gaskets replaced.
Easy to maintain: You need to wash a total of one piece, instead of 3-4 like most humidifiers these days.
Easy to fill: This is probably the best part about this humidifier. Simply use a one gallon jug to pour water into an open hole. No tanks or lids to mess with; just dump it in! Easy as visiting a toilet when the seats already up, spraying down a #1, and exiting without regard for the flusher, or even the sink!
Comments on what everybody hates about this unit:
The Blue Light: The reviewers are 100% correct. The blue light is ultra-stupid, especially if you plan on using this in your bedroom. One reviewer tried covering it up with tape and the light shined right thru! Gotta say I believe that, given the candlepower of that baby! Based on that review entirely, I decided to try a really really thick piece of Gorilla tape on the inside of top piece, which seemed to do the job. It blocks out the light from the fill level completely, and all you can still see is a dim little blue dot, when you look straight down at the fan. Check out my pictures for where I placed the tape. If it gets moldy or something, it only will take a few seconds to peel the tape, hit the surface with an alcohol wipe, and apply a fresh piece of Gorilla tape.
No Medium Speed: Again, the other reviewers are 100% correct, in identifying this glaringly obvious short coming.
Other Comments:
The high speed is great, because it adds moisture to a room, and fast! The sound isn’t particularly loud, given the moisture it expels, but I don’t know that you would want to sleep or take a business call next to it.
The low speed is also great, because while it doesn’t seem to be doing something, it’s doing something; that’s what’s so freaking cool about it. With normal background noise, one can’t even tell it’s on. I took advice from some other reviewers, and just leave it on all the time during the super cold and dry spells.
Now back to that lack of medium: If you use it in your bedroom, and don’t choose to leave it on all day, you will be sad without the medium speed I think. When I get bored, and if the humidifier doesn’t let me down this season, I may try replacing the switch with a 3-speed one, or a straight up potentiometer. While I am in there, I will probably disable the blue light too. Or I might just continue to leave it on all the time, with the Gorilla tape; who knows how much lazier I’ll be in 2020?
So in closing people, I think the Honeywell Easy to Care is about the best you are going to do at this point. If Honeywell ever decides to trade in the 2000 Smurf-power neon-blue buffoon-beacon for a 3 speed switch, I think we will have arrived at the best humidifier ever created…
