Perfect for motorhome
I've been on a quest to find a good RV dehumidifier for years. I've tried at least 5 different dehumidifiers over the years. So far this one is the best of the bunch. The best part is that it'll work in much cooler temps than compressor types. It's also very quiet and lightweight. My only concern now is how long it will last. I'll edit the rating later if I have reliability problems. I can run this unit on low in my 250 sf motorhome and it keeps the humidity right where I want it. it uses about 250 watts on low and uses about 4 KWH per day with an outside RH of 90% and temp of 40 to 50. I maintain the humidity setting at 55% and a couple of external monitors says it stays from 57% to 59% RH.
Update 1 - After running it for a week, the humidity is holding steady at 54/55% as monitored by two other separate sensors. Power usage has settled down to about 1KW per day which amounts to 9 cents per day in my area.
Update 2 - I liked the first one so much, I bought another one for my garage. I'm realizing the big difference between the common compressor dehumidifier and this desiccant dehumidifier is the temperature operating range. This dehumidifier will still work very well below 60 degrees (down to 34 degrees) whereas a compressor type becomes very inefficient and quits working below 50 degrees. Ivation also understates the room size that it can dehumidify. I'm using it in a 576 sf garage and it works great. I can run two cars wet from rain in at night and they'll both be very close to dry if not completely dry the next morning.
I noticed that the humidity readout on this unit is about 10% lower than my external hygrometer for what it's worth.
As for the comment on the external drain not working, you have to ensure that the hose has a tight fit or indeed it will leak, fill up the reservoir and shut off the unit.
Update 3 - One year in and both dehumidifiers are still working great. They really do extract a lot of water.
My original estimate for power was too high. I can see no difference in my power bill after running both dehumidifiers all winter.
Update 4 - One and a half years in and one of my two units failed. Dissection found a warped desiccant disk. This disk was apparently warped by sudden power loss while on high. Next to the disk is a high wattage heater that probably warped the disk on power loss due to residual heat. Plastic cross bars next to the disk had black rub marks on them. I managed to repair it by removing the disk and warping it somewhat.
Kudos to the design engineers as this dehumidifier is made to be repaired. Rather than all of the plastic clips and catches, it's all screwed together making it easy to disassemble. In all of my years of repairing things, this is the best of the bunch. The main board is very well marked as to what each connection is for and the wire routing is excellent. All in all a very well designed unit but the disk needs some enhancements to keep it from warping. It's going to be interesting to see it the other unit eventually has the same failure.
BTW I contacted their customer service through email and heard back from them within 48 hours. They were very responsive and helpful as they were willing to replace my unit (without requiring me to ship the failed unit back) if it was under warranty. Unfortunately my warranty had expired so I couldn't take them up on it.
Update 5 - Unfortunately I've had to reduce my rating from 5 star to 3 star. It quit again shortly after my first repair. This time I traced it to the disk motor. This is a CW 115VAC motor that has a mechanism to reverse it if it starts up in the wrong direction. This mechanism had failed and is well beyond the repair capability of most folks. This is a part that you can't get because the company won't sell parts to the owners. I went looking for the motor with no luck so was forced to dig into it. For most folks, that would mean send it in for repair or toss it. A one year life doesn't speak well for this dehumidifier. My other one is still operational. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to fail.
Beyond the motor failure this is still an incredible dehumidifier when it works.
Update 6 - This is year three. Since I repaired the first unit, they have both worked very well. Consistently draws a lot of water. There's no other dehumidifier on the market that still works down to freezing temps.
