Quick review of the Asus Zenbook UX501VW, from a former Mac user.
Here is a quick review of the Asus Zenbook UX501VW, from a former Mac user. The Good: The computer over all is a powerful and snappy laptop with a beautiful display. After removing the bloatware and allowing for Windows, Asus software, and driver updates; boot times vastly improved over the out of the box operation speeds. The GTX 960M graphics card was able to keep up with both Dark Souls 3 and Quantum Break at 1080p Max settings really well, without dropping below 30 frames (while plugged in). Quantum break was also playable at 2556X1440 Resolution. The screen is to small to detect any difference between 2k and 4k Resolutions. The built in 4k monitor operates at 60hz; however, dropping it below 4k does not increase the monitors refresh rate (for those wondering). The keys feel great with a proper amount of travel and responsiveness ; however, my palm did tend to hit the track pad pretty often which I will delve into later. The battery life is surprisingly good for a rig of this caliber, with my longest stent without a charge being close to 7 hours (under normal internet browsing usage). The Aesthetics of the Asus Zenbook seem to carry the classic Asus brushed aluminum look with exception of the spiral pattern on the keyboard, which appears to have no purpose whatever, aside from looking pretty cool. Overall the Zenbook is a great laptop with all of the top specs for future proofing, especially with its Thunderbolt 3 port capable of 40gbs transfer speeds. Be on the look out for eGPU enclosures and other docking stations that will take full advantage of the Hardware! The Bad: As mentioned earlier the trackpad definitely cost Asus a star on this review. Not only is the location poorly thought out, landing almost directly under my right palm while typing, but the overall build quality is lacking as well. The track pad on my laptop appears to be installed to close on the left to the chasis, causing the left click to stick on occasion. Gestures are ok, but the built in Asus Smart Gesture software is lacking customization. Overall, the touchpad is usable and functions as it should. Closing Notes: I must admit I do have a bias when it comes to trackpads, and hands down Mac has the better track pad. However, Asus won over my affection in every other category. Without comparing software and aesthetics (which are always up for debate) the Zenbook is faster, lighter, better graphic performance and operates much more quiet. Previous Laptop Mid 2012 Macbook Pro, Retina, 512 SSD, GTX 650M. I would definitely recommend this computer to anyone looking for a computer with the capability of running graphic intense programs/ games, and the versatility of taking it anywhere.
