All-Star Sports Climber -- Screw Installation with Photos
We purchased the All-Star Sports Climber after my wife's research. It's a good size for indoor or outdoor use. It is very light (for its size), so we can understand why others had them blow over in the yard. Our son (18 months) has enjoyed the climber, and we think he'll appreciate the basketball hoop, football, and soccer goal a bit more as he gets older. We're pleased. Only 4 stars because of the poor job Step 2 did in in explaining the screw installation. In my opinion, they are NECESSARY to ensure that the climber stays together, so INSTALL THE SCREWS! Without them, the toy relies only on the snapped together plastic pieces. The screws also add stability, and enable you to pick up and move the climber in one piece.
SCREW INSTALLATION --- You'll note right off the bat that no holes are provided, and the instructions are not very helpful. Here is what I did to create holes and get the screws in place ...
1. Drill a 1/8" diameter (or slightly smaller) hole in the top of each of the 4 flanges on the red and yellow/orange pieces (see photos for positioning of the screws). I'm going to recommend that you drill only through the first layer of plastic, for reasons that make more sense later.
2. Align the screws and turn them in ONLY A FEW TURNS, angling them so that when they're fully turned in, the heads will sit flush with the plastic. Turn the screws only so far to go through the first layer of plastic. SAFETY NOTE: The screws on the one side (red on our climber) will go in vertically, but you'll have to angle the screws on the other side (yellow/orange on ours) so that the heads will sit flush. You don't want to have the edges of the screws exposed, since the flanges are in prime places where little hands will be reaching and gripping to maneuver up the ladder and down the slide.
3. Now, squeeze together the side parts and the ladder or slide so that there is no gap between the two. Turn the screws down until they hit the next layer of plastic, keeping the screws aimed so that the heads will sit flush against the flanges when fully turned in. Turning the screws will get difficult at this point, so try not to strip them or create sharp edges. Keeping the parts squeezed together and the screws aimed properly is critical throughout this step. You can use a manual screwdriver, or a handheld "driver" tool (what I used). The screw will punch through the next layer(s) of plastic on its own.
4. Keep turning until the screw is flush with the top of the flange.
