Great Pan with Specific Manufacturer's Specs. Read to Find Out More.
I own a parrot, and parrots are extremely sensitive to quite a number of things, one of them being that the fumes from overheated Teflon can kill them, so I'm constantly searching for ways to cook with safer options, leading me to look over this product. I will admit that part of what drew me to consider getting this pan was because it has some of the most polarized reviews I've ever seen on an item on Amazon. There are lots of five-star reviews, but also quite a lot of one-star reviews criticizing the product and its features, in particular, it's non-stick claims. But since I was curious on how the product performed when used explicitly to the manufacturer's suggestions, I decided to try it out for myself, and here are my findings. The pan comes with some bold claims on the front of the packaging, including: - Non-sick Ti-Cerama coating: everything just slides right off the pan - No sticking, no scratching, aluminum cookware - Made with titanium and ceramic - 9.5 x 1.8 inches in size - No oil or butter needed - It weighs less than frying pans of comparable size - 100% Safe: PFOA, PTFE, and PFOS-Free - Oven safe up to 500 degrees (F) - Dishwasher safe But the reverse side of the flier actually had some rather important additional notes: - Note: This model does not work with induction. - Never use non stick sprays - Gotham Steel Ti-Cerama fry pan with titanium ceramic coating is designed for cooking without oil or butter. If you choose to use oil or butter, always use it at the proper heat setting. For example, extra virgin olive oil and butter should only be used at low heat. All this information made me wonder if some of the issues other reviewers with one-star ratings had experienced were because they might have ignored or not seen portions of the directions (such as using the pan with induction elements or using non-stick sprays). I have no way of knowing, but for my test, I made sure to follow the directions to the letter. I cooked two sausage and then two eggs under medium heat atop a gas heating element using no sprays or oils of any kind. The surface of the pan is sort of a subdued copper color with a bit of shimmer to it and the handle is silver in color. The pan isn't terribly large and had a fair amount of curve to it, so I wasn't able to cook both foods at once. The first thing I noticed was that cooking with this pan meant it was completely absent of the usual audio cues I associate with cooking, because most times as I cook, I am hearing the oil or butter bubbling, giving me a clue as to how hot the pan is and how quickly my food was cooking. In this case, there was very little audio to go on to tell you how far along your food was. This pan (unfortunately) doesn't come with a matching lid, either, so in order to try and cook my eggs, I had to use a spare glass lid I had that didn't quite fit. But on the whole: cooking went wonderfully, and at least for me, the pan was completely non-stick on both the sausage and eggs, as you can see from my photos. Better yet: once I pulled the eggs out, I was able to use a damp paper towel to clean up the little bit of remnants inside the pan, and honestly it was some of the quickest clean up I've ever done since everything came right off. Do keep in mind that the handle (unfortunately) gets hot, so don't make the same mistake I did and try to grab it during clean-up. On the whole I was very impressed with the pan, but I feel a bit of caution towards it in regards to how I might cook some things. Because of the emphasis on not using oil or butter, it gives me pause about how the pan might perform if I chose to use either, or what if I wanted to use sauces? Would doing so ruin the pan's coating? I'm honestly not sure, and that uncertainty, and the fact some key information was listed on the inside of the packaging rather than the outside is part of why I deducted one star, also because for the moment, because of its limitations, it can't replace my other non-stick pans completely, it only services as a very nice pan for very specific niches. So for the time being I am going to keep using it according to the manufacturer's specs and will report back with my findings. I would recommend this pan if you are looking for a pan to not use any sprays or oils with, so simple foods like sausage, eggs, steak, or even veggies may be perfect. Also keep in mind that this pan doesn't work with induction elements. But if those limitations sound fine by you, I would recommend you consider giving it a shot for your own kitchen arsenal, because I see myself using mine for a long time to come. I am a longtime Amazon Prime customer who writes reviews in my free time. I was appreciative to be given an opportunity to test and review this non-stick titanium frying pan at a discount for my honest and unbiased review. If you have any questions or comments, please comment or message and I'll be glad to help! TWO MONTH UPDATE: After Two months of use, this pan still performs great. I continue to use it with simple foods and without any non-stick sprays and foods come off just as easily as when I first started cooking with it.
