Not for the faint of heart
When we bought our house the number one item on my to do list was to paint our kitchen cabinets. They were a dark, dated wood that made the space feel small and dirty.
So I did my research and decided on the pure white cabinet restoration kit. The kit includes a DVD which I watched before I touched even one cabinet door. The DVD is helpful and I was anxious to get started so I pulled on the gloves and started deglossing. About halfway through, I realized how much work this was going to be. Years of grime had to come off these doors before I could even think about painting them. The deglossing alone took a few hours on our 13 doors, front and back, 4 drawers, and built in spaces.
Next was the paint step. Yay!! Finally I could start on the look I wanted. I decided to start with the drawers because they were smaller and I could perfect the technique. I quickly realized one coat wasn't going to cut it. It took 3-4 coats to cover the dark wood with white. Once I realized this I decided to back track and prime the entire project before moving forward with paint. Even though rustoleum claims no sanding or priming is required, I decided primer was the safer way to go to ensure the crisp white I wanted.
So I primed, primed again, then painted, and painted again. At this point I was about two weeks into the project, working through the steps on weekends and after work. Once the second coat of paint was on, I was able to apply the top coat. (I skipped the glazed look, but it is an option.) The top coat was the easiest of all the steps, which was a relief after the difficulty of everything else.
Ultimately it took about 2 weeks to complete the project. I had half a can of white paint left and 3/4 of the top coat. I used all of the deglosser. I'm happy with the results but you should know how big a project this is before taking it on. There were several times as I was painting that I wished I had just hired someone to do it.
