Makes nice belgian waffles
This is my third waffle maker as I wanted to see how this one compares to my other two belgian waffle makers. I have a Waring WMK300A Professional Stainless-Steel Belgian Waffle Maker and a KRUPS 654-75 WaffleChef 4-Slice Belgian Waffle Maker with non stick plates LED indicators, Stainless Steel.
My favorite waffle maker is the Waring Pro only because it is a little better made and it comes with recipes; although a few people said this one stopped working for them. For me it has always worked. The Krups waffle maker, which was the only one I purchased myself, is a dissapointment. However, this Hamilton Beach is a close second to the Waring Pro and the price listed as of this writing is about $7 cheaper. Below are the PROS and CONS:
PROS:
- It makes nice Belgian waffles; just as good as my Waring Pro. A setting of 2-1/2 turned the waffles nicely brown.
- The indicator light turns green when the unit is ready for the batter and when the waffles are done.
- The waffle maker is easy to flip.
- It has a collapsible handle for storage.
- The waffle irons are easily removed for cleaning (something my other two waffle makers don't have). This is a great feature.
- Any spillage is caught by the plastic drip tray which is very easy to clean.
- The waffle irons and drip tray are dishwasher safe as long as the SANI setting on the dishwasher is not used. I don't use the dishwasher, so this point about being dishwasher safe was not tested by me but the instructions say this is possible so I'll take them at their word.
CONS:
- The unit feels cheaply made.
- No recipes come with the unit.
- The cord is 26 inches--short but typical of many appliances today.
- Some of the batter I used got stuck in the creases toward the back of the unit where the waffle maker opens. That part is difficult to clean but no more difficult than any other unit I have. In fact, if batter is accidentally spilled in the creases, some will remain behind as a toothpick does not even get it out.
Based on my results, I do feel this belgian waffle maker is very good even though it does feel cheaply made. The removable waffle irons are a great feature because this makes the unit so much easier to clean than the other two Belgian waffle makers I have.
