What is included in this little collection...
I just downloaded this and have not read any of it yet. However I have skimmed through the table of contents and the first few chapters of each text to see what is here. Since there are no reviews yet I will tell you those things that I wanted to know. Namely, which sacred books are included in this collection, and how is the Kindle formatting? This book includes selections from: *The Vedic Hymns (pre-Hindu) - 16 chapters/hymns. Translated by F. Max Muller. *Zend-Avesta (Zoroastrian) - 20 chapters including creation myth, religious rituals, and prayers. Translated by James Darmestetter. *Dhammapada (Theravada Buddhist) - 26 chapters (compared to my paperback Dhammapada the whole thing appears to be here). Translated by F. Max Muller. *Upanishads (Hindu) - 4 chapters slightly longer than chapers in the previous books. Translated by F. Max Muller. *Koran (Muslim) - 5 of the Koran's 29 chapters plus a lengthy bonus essay. Translated by George Sale. *The Life of Buddha (Mahayana Buddhism) - 5 lengthy chapers by Asvaghosha Bodhisattva translated from Sansrit to Chinese. Translated to English by Samuel Beal. The title page gives a copyright date of 1900 and credits the "critical and biographical sketches" prior to each text to Epiphanius Wilson. The formatting of this ebook is outstanding. There is extensive hyper-linking in the table of contents. In most cases you can jump not just to a chapter but to a sub-section. Also the footnotes in the texts are convneniently linked and never get in the way of reading. Unfortunately none of these texts are really formatted as poetry. The Vedic Hymns are in giant block paragraphs. The Dhammapada is formatted in short paragraphs which can be easily understood as poetic couplets or verses, but the poetic aspect of it is not necessarily obvious. Not only is there no poetic formatting, but there are also no verse numbers. I don't think that would be a huge problem unless you are a scholar, but if you're a scholar you probably have much better copies of these texts. Overall this ebook looks easy enough to read. I'm just thankful for all of the links.
