Breakdown of Product
I bought this product 05/17/2016 from my local PetCo. I originally decided to read these reviews to see how frequently to use the product since the bottle itself does not have a recommended use frequency. Since then I noticed several common complaints that I felt should be address in one place. I hope to provide a single review that lays out a reasonably through breakdown of this product for the lazier of us. Issue #1: It seems that a lot of people underestimate the smell of this product. Clove has a strong scent, as does peppermint. This product uses CONCENTRATED forms of both to kill/repel the tiny pests, together you can expect the scent to be VERY strong. Be aware! It does however seem to dissipate fairly quickly according to other reviewers, as soon as a day, and as long as a week. Issue #2: Another common complaint I saw was that the product feels slippery when rubbing it into their pet's fur, which many found distasteful. Allow me to explain why that is. This product contains as surfactant called sodium laurel sulfate, SLS is also in dish soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, and many other common household items. A surfactant is a substance that breaks down the surface tension on skin, hair, clothes, dishes, whatever - in order to increase the surface area available for cleaning, or in this case it makes it so you can apply the product more easily to your pet's fur. This is not the best or safest chemical, yes chemical, in the world but I tolerate it in this product because, in my experience this product works. Issue #3: Reactions to Clove or Peppermint. Let me just bring this to the forefront. Other reviewers have met with disastrous results using this product. Some animals have died, that is however a potential side effect of using any product in your home, but you should be aware that your pet may have a reaction. One reviewer used this product on her small dog and due to her dilligence she managed to save her dog from what was possibly a severe allergic reaction by bathing and rinsing it after noticing an extreme personality change from energetic to lethargic after use of the product. Other reviewer's animals have exhibited sneezing and coughing, after a bath, they too recovered quickly. Those seem to be uncommon cases, and I believe that in most instances a bath and no further exposure to the product is sufficient to save an animals life after use of this product. But you should be diligent. Any vet would tell you to observe and monitor your pet after use of any new product. Issue #4: This is a more recent issue as far as I can tell, but this product seems to be arriving with either no spray top, or a defective spray top. Issue #5: Aversion to the spray nozzle. You may find that your pet is scared of the sound of the spray itself. A solution another reviewer found is to spray a washcloth and then rub that on their pet. This seems like it would take longer to achieve the level of damp required by the instructions but obviously, if you are reading this, your pet is worth it. Issue #6: My initial issue of use frequency. On reviewer said that following the direction once every two weeks seems to be enough. Another has more insect pests in their area and said they use it daily. (I believe, my memory at this point is muddling up individual reviews now.) Issue #7: Fur length. This product doesn't seems to work as well on long haired or larger animals, probably because there is too much area to cover effectively. I hope this has successfully consolidated the reviews for pages 1-7 (as of right now). I hope this helps someone and I hope you find the product to be as successful as I do, and as many others have also. Please don't misread this review as negative, it's simply so you don't have to go through a bunch of reviews to see if you like the product or not.
