Works Great...once you learn how to program it correctly
I received the Harmony 650 remote in a blister pack, which I initially started to open with scissors. On the back there is a perforated area that can easily be peeled back to remove the contents, so no scissors are required. I setup a MyHarmony account online and programmed the remote for my TV, Blu-ray player, cable box, and 7.1 surround receiver. The online programming is pretty straight forward.
The remote worked to turn on my TV and switch between activities, but failed to properly set the correct source (TV, HDMI1, HDMI2) after being turned off. I searched the internet and found a suggestion to increase the Power-On Delay for my Samsung TV from the 7.2sec default setting. I needed to use a 10sec. Power-On Delay setting to get the TV to turn on, wait for the delay, and then reliably set the correct source. I also set the Inter-Device Delay from its .5sec. default setting to 1.0sec. Logitech provides NO instructions online for making these changes. To change these two settings you need to manually hold down the `Help' button on the remote for five seconds and then select the device you want to change. The rest is pretty straight forward, but it took searching the Internet to even find out that I need to make these changes, so I am deducting ½ Star from my Amazon rating.
Next I created a Netflix activity for my Panasonic BDP-DMT220 Blu-ray player. On the first try it stopped at the `Internet' screen and did not properly accept the `Netflix' IR command. I went back into the online program selected `Customize this Activity' and then added a delay before the Netflix IR command, which required 5sec. This is probably a requirement for setup of functions with any Blu-ray player.
Next I created an activity to watch the Cable/Antenna input on my Samsung TV, but again it would not set the source properly. I discovered Logitech used the `Input Antenna' IR command for `TV' in the source list. Input Antenna only works when the TV is already in the Cable/Antenna input mode, so this was a bad choice by Logitech - It can't work! After much trial and error I created a new TV activity using HDMI2 source, an added 2sec. delay, followed by a `Source' IR command, which selects the next device in the source sequence (TV, HDMI1, HDMI2). I am deducting another ½ Star from my Amazon rating, since this should have been corrected by Logitech a long time ago!
Now that I've finally gotten the Harmony 650 Remote programmed to work properly I really love it! All of the device remote control functions I use seem to be available, but it did take a bit of learning to find some of them. Logitech has a huge database of device settings to manage and keep updated, so we should cut them a little bit of slack.
Update January 15, 2013:
My wife started complaining that the remote doesn't always work for her. I watched her use the remote to select 'Watch TV' after we had been watching Netflix on our Blu-ray player the night before. She pointed the remote, pushed the 'Watch TV' button, the TV turned on, and then she put the remote down on the coffee table. The TV stayed on HDMI2 used by the Blu-ray player! The reason is simple and so is the solution. I need to use a 10 second 'Power-On delay'with our Samsung TV, after which it will then accept a change 'Source' or other IR command. Once I explained that she needed to keep the remote pointed at the TV for at least 10 sec. she has had no further issues. I also had her try using the Samsung TV remote to do the same thing and it took even longer than 10 sec.
MORAL: Keep the remote pointed at your devices until the beam indicator on the remote LCD screen goes away and you will not have this problem. I love my Harmony 650!
Update March 14, 2013:
I started getting the 'Low Battery' signal two days ago, but waited to see how long it would continue to work. Today it popped up again and the LCD screen got dim, so I changed the batteries for the first time. That's almost 2 1/2 months and not bad considering I spent quite a bit of time programming and reprogramming the remote on this first set of batteries. I haven't had any of the "reset" issues others are complaining about and I dropped the remote from about 5' onto a hardwood floor. The battery cover flew off and I was worried the remote might have gotten damaged. There wasn't a mark on it and it did NOT reset. The wife still occasionally has issues with turn-on. She forgets to keep it pointed at the devices for the full 10 sec. required with my Samsung TV when the 'Source' needs to be changed (i.e. 'Watch a Movie' last viewed and now 'Watch TV' being turned ON). You can't fault the remote for user error. I'm still very pleased with Logitech Harmony 650 remote.
