Turn your cat into a movie star
Tomorrow marks one year to the day since we purchased the CitiKitty. Did it work? See the video if you want proof. It's insanely cool! We don't have litter boxes anywhere in our house. Our Siberian cat, Sun Tzu, has gone from using one toilet to two others that we have in the house.
HOW EASY WAS IT?
Foolproof. You put the training seat on the toilet and then sprinkle cat litter around it. We cut a larger ring about every two weeks with some strong scissors. Finally, we removed the training seat and he kept using the toilet. Early one morning I found him using the toilet in our bathroom when I had gotten out of bed. Sometimes he waits for me to get done then jumps up and does his stuff. I feel like he is trying to show dominance and mark the territory. As long as he stays out of the potted plants and tubs, we'll be cool.
DOES IT MAKE A MESS?
A little at first. Cats like to bury their droppings. Kitty litter will end up on the floor around the toilet but a quick pass of the vacuum and you're good to go. Make sure to set it up on a toilet that you don't need to use for a few weeks. I imagine it wouldn't have been pretty if we had tried to remove the training seat. Also, be careful to get cat litter that can be flushed down the toilet (and make sure it doesn't clump too much that it might clog the pipes).
WILL THE CAT PROTEST?
Maybe. Ours wasn't too bad. We put catnip up on the lid and the litter box next to the toilet at first. We placed him on the toilet a few times and he figured it out. The litter box was removed and he went cold turkey. Now that the toilet is free of the CitiKitty contraption, he'll sometimes meow for us to go and watch him. It's like he either wants moral support or just wants to show off.
WILL THE CAT FALL INTO THE TOILET?
Ours did. We watched him as he was getting used to the larger holes in the training seat and would grab him real quick if he started to slip. Make sure you use positive reinforcement (i.e. treats, catnip, reassuring voice) to make him/her feel comfortable. I tell him either "good boy go pee" or good boy go poop" after each time and now he'll respond to commands like "go pee" (obviously when he needs to). He hardly ever falls in now that we've removed the CitiKitty training seat.
WILL ANYBODY BELIEVE YOU?
Probably not. We recorded videos on our phones to show folks and posted one on YouTube for those who don't live in town (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZKizYm-VFY). We get lots of comments about how he's like Jinxy. Visitors love to watch him when they're over the house and he walks into the bathroom. He seems to shoot them a glaring look, like it's no big deal and he wants some privacy.
