WOW - What a camera! Everything I wanted the R to be an more. UPDATE: see edits
Coming from the EOS R, this camera is everything I wanted the R to be. Everything I loved about the R is still here - focus accuracy, face / eye detection, bright usable electronic viewfinder. The R5 steps this up and brings a nearly lag-free viewfinder (at a higher resolution!), very high speed autofocus including eye/face detection, IBIS, and many other features. For me, most importantly is the lag free viewfinder and the focusing ability to keep up with my kids and still maintain amazing accuracy. The only downsides I've seen so far is a fairly short battery life.
UPDATE: Camera is still working great. I am not a video shooter, but if I were, I probably would not be happy, as all the high speed / high quality modes to have short use times. Also, after shooting photos for a couple of hours with no video, a lot of the video modes are not available due to heat or only available for a short time. I started up a 4K HQ record and within 2 minutes, I had the overheat warning.
Another issue I've run into is the wifi does not work at all on my unit. I can't connect to any of my wireless access points to try out the photo syncing features which I was hoping to use. Not everyone is having this issue so it could be I have a faulty unit. I will contact canon tech support.
UPDATE 2: Over several photo sessions in the last week I've noticed that not only does taking photos reduce the video time available, but it also makes the camera physically warm to the touch, something I've not experienced in any other camera I've owned. Due to this and the wifi issues I'm seeing, I'm going to dock this one star for the time being.
UPDATE 3: I believe the wifi issue is not my specific device and is caused by one of the wireless access points in my neighbors homes. Something about it the R5 does not like. I've seen reports of others with the same issues, so hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware update. If this is fixed with a firmware update, I'll bump the score back up to 5 stars. As for the overheating issue, the camera does continue to get a bit warm during shooting, but from what I've read, this is normal for a mirrorless camera with IBIS.
