Great Performing Budget Tarp! Perfect for Hammock Camping or Camp Shelter!
This is a great performing budget Tarp! The item description lists the tarp as 10 ft x 10 ft; the finished size of my item was approximately 116.5 inches square (approximately 9.7 feet x 9.7 feet square). The material is lightweight ripstop 210T Dacron with a waterproof coating. There is one major lateral seam down the middle that has been nicely waterproofed with what appears to be sealing tape. The seam and edges are nicely double stitched. There are eight identical tie outs (three on each side as depicted in the item description) which allows you multiple options for tieouts and configuration. The tarp is a square tarp; not a catenary cut as depicted in the graphic. Each tieout is reinforced with a triangular doubler (double the material), and has a nicely stitched grosgain loop with a metal grommet. This ensures the integrity of the tarp body while providing a durable tieout that provides several anchoring options. Included are eight lightweight nylon "hi-vis orange" ropes to use for tieouts. On one end of each rope is a plastic adjuster to allow for easy adjustments of the line to get just the right tarp tautness. There are also eight aluminum hook stakes included (the budget variety). This square tarp and the multiple tieouts allow you to configure the tarp in many ways; in the pictures below I hung the tarp in the typical "A-Frame" configuration with a 116.5 inch ridgeline, and also a diagonal configuration which gave me about a 165 inch ridgeline and only requires 2 stakes (this is my preferred configuration for hammock camping). In the A-Frame configuration this tarp would adequately cover a 9.5 foot hammock (possibly up to a 10 foot hammock depending on the preferred sag of your hammock). In the diagonal configuration this tarp would cover any hammock up to 12 feet long! I tested the waterproofness of the tarp by forming a bucket with the tarp material and filling with water; after holding the tarp like this for over 5 minutes there was absolutely no leakage through the material (see pictures below). Everything comes packaged in a nice color matched nylon bag with a lock tie. The stakes and ropes come packaged in a ziplock bag; it would be nice to include a smaller nylon bag for the stakes/ropes but that is my personal preference. I would recommend using a ridgeline with this tarp (or any tarp for that matter!). Also, I plan on purchasing some better 3 sided aluminum stakes to replace the simple aluminum stakes that come with this item (since the tarp is so very nice!). This is a great lightweight, budget tarp for all you hammockers out there! I have a much more expensive tarp that I'm leaving at home during an upcoming 4 day Colorado backpacking trip so I can take this one. Recommended! I did receive this item for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. If you found this review helpful, please vote "yes" below!
